I CANNOT BELIEVE IT'S NOVEMBER.
I've been trying to write this post for days, but with my work schedule and trying to get enough sleep, it hasn't been possible. I'll have my project 365 post up *hopefully* tomorrow.
If you've seen the last few weeks of project 365, you would have seen little bits and pieces of this crazy costume. So before I get into too much detail, THE FINAL COSTUME!
If you aren't familiar with the story "Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister, then I highly recommend you check it out. It's a children's book about a little fish with shiny scales who learns to share his beauty with his friends.
Why rainbow fish? Well I've always wanted to be a fish (and one of my nicknames is "Trishy-Fishy"). But it was also a chance to design something that isn't a very popular costume. I went out for a little bit on Halloween and saw a lot of the same costume over and over. I love being unique, even if people didn't recognize the costume.
Some costume details:
- I started this last year but with my trip to guatemala and super storm sandy, I didn't finish nor did I go out.
- I made the "under-dress" from the light blue glitter fabric
- Each scale is hand sewn onto the dress. (except the top row)
- In the story, Rainbow Fish gives away his shiny scales SO most silver scales are velcro-ed on, so that they are able to be given away.
- There are three size scales, growing larger towards the bottom AND there are six different colors, not including the shiny scales.
Front and Back. I tried to overlap the scales over the zipper so it wasn't noticeable. The back scales do not have velcro.

I wanted to go out for Halloween, but honestly, Halloween in Hoboken is not what I'm used to. Drew and I went out for a drink and were walking to another bar when it started to rain. This dress in rain is not fun. So we decided to buy our own candy and have a movie night in the apartment. The amount of work that went into this wasn't worth it this year, but who knows when I have to dress like a fish!

This costume was so much fun to work on and I'm happy I made it and managed to finish it. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I've already decided on what I'm making next year!

What are the measurements on the scales? I’m trying to recreate as best as possible.

Hi there Sam! Each scale is a half circle, so the measurements I’m going to give you are the diameter by the height-top to lowest point. The smallest scale size (finished measurements) are 3.5″ x 2″. The middle scale size is 4.5″ x 2.5″. Largest scales are 6″ x 3″. If I remember correctly, each scale had a half inch seam allowance. Hope this helps!!! How much fabric did you use for each color

Hi Bridget, I don’t remember the exact amounts, depending on how many colors you are using you can probably get a yard of each. Two yards to be on the safe side if you are sewing double sided scales and if you are making a larger dress than mine. I’d rather see you get a little extra than not have enough!

Hi Becky, everything was made from glittery cotton except for the shiny scales, which were just a “costume fabric” from Joann Fabric.

Hi Becky, did you put the small scales at top then medium in middle and large towards the bottom. Or did you varies sizes throughout the length of the dress.

Hi Ann, Trish here =) For this dress, the scales went from small at the top, to large at the bottom.
