There are a few different things that can happen when I see fabric. 1. I hate it and walk by it with no regret 2. I fall in love, have absolutely no idea what to do with it but need it anyway and 3. Fall in love and instantly have an idea of how to use it. When I was on Instagram the other day, #3 happened.
I follow a semi local craft store, Rock, Paper, Scissor located in Montclair, New Jersey. They posted an image of their window display and that’s when I saw it- Crimson Tate’s Succulent line from Windham Fabrics. It’s beautiful, unique and just straight up adorable!
As soon as I saw this fabric, I knew it wanted to be a mini skirt. That border calls for it! So I ordered a yard and a half. I began looking for online tutorials and decided to follow Melissa Esplin’s Kate Spade skirt. I started marking where the pleats would go but quickly found out I didn’t buy enough fabric for this tutorial.
So I had to do math. I hate math. It took way too long to figure out my pleats. I almost gave up it was taking so long. But after a short breather, the numbers added up and I had my measurements.
I didn’t have a real reason to make this skirt but when the inspiration strikes, you have to go with it! I’ll be wearing this for Easter and if I ever do a craft show, I would love to wear this. Plan ahead right?

Ah I saw and loved this fabric, but had no clue what to do with it– my mind always skips to dresses, I forget about skirts! This makes me want to get some and make a skirt too!

Hi! Did you follow Melissa Esplin’s Kate Spade skirt pattern exactly? Or did you end up needing more than two yards of fabric? I have been wanting a succulent printed skirt forever, and if I have to end up making my own it would be totally worth it! This is the cutest skirt ever!

Hi Miesha, thank you so much! I loosely followed the tutorial. I only bought a yard and a half of fabric and her version calls for two. All I did was measure out different sized pleats based on my waist measurements. If you want to follow Melissa’s pattern exactly, definitely get 2 yards of fabric.

Your version of the skirt looks slightly shorter than Melissa Esplin’s which I like, because I am petite like you. I think I will definitely try it out. Thank you!

Yes it is quite a bit shorter (mostly because of my height) but either way, fabric with a boarder will look fantastic as a mini or even a midi skirt! Looking forward to seeing yours!
