Flannel Shirt Refashion

Sometime last year my mom went through my dad's closet, leaving a pile of clothing for future refashions. This shirt caught my eye and I kept it in my stash for a rainy day. Well, yesterday was quite a rainy day.

I was watching an episode of Rosanne a few weeks ago and Rosanne was wearing a plaid shirt with a zipper top and it intrigued me. It looked casual but super cozy and I knew this could make a cool refashion project. So out came that old shirt!

This is what I started with.

First step was to take off the collar and cut the front facings off. At this point I should have sewn the zipper in, but no, I didn't. I started taking the sides in next. Because my front was left open, it was difficult to take this top in.

I put the shirt on inside out and made a guestimate of how much to take in. I did this about 4 times before I finally got a good fit. I measured the amount taken off then did the same to the other side. What I should have done was insert the zipper first then alter the fit on my dress form.

After that process, I hemmed and bottom and the sleeves, then inserted the zipper.

The last detail I wanted to do was change the pocket location. I ripped the pockets from the top and sewed them onto the bottom. This is the final product!

I'm not looking forward to the cold weather coming in, but at least I'll be warm!
